Born and raised in Staten Island, Medhini Lokuhewa has played a large role in her community as a Kandyan Dancer. For the past 13 years, she has been a dancer at the Sri Lankan Dance Academy of NY, a non-profit organization that focuses on preserving the culture and heritage of Sri Lankan musical arts in America.
For this episode, Lokuhewa discusses Sri Lankan dance traditions and explains how through highs, and lows, dance has guided her in life. Throughout the years, Lokuhewa’s love and appreciation for dance have grown. She has always felt the dance was a way to express herself when words couldn’t.
