{"id":5659,"date":"2023-12-21T19:28:31","date_gmt":"2023-12-22T00:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctmd.org\/?p=5659"},"modified":"2023-12-22T12:17:24","modified_gmt":"2023-12-22T17:17:24","slug":"folkcolombia-escuela-holiday-and-graduation-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ctmd.org\/magazine\/ctmd-news\/folkcolombia-escuela-holiday-and-graduation-show\/","title":{"rendered":"FolkCOLOMBIA Escuela Holiday and Graduation Show!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marking the end of FolkCOLOMBIA Escuela\u2019s Fall 2023 s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">eason, on Saturday, Dec 9th, school doors were opened to local friends, families and the public, inviting everyone to share in our Holiday Season program while celebrating the accomplishments of our talented students. Meeting every week, each student\u2013and even some parents\u2013was awarded a graduation certificate for their efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program\u2019s focus this Fall was \u201cEl Pasillo Chocoano\u201d, a deeply traditional Colombian dance from the Andean Choco region. Dance master and director Rub\u00e9n Dario Mejia and his wife Paula Toro Velez demonstrated the humorous air and delicate yet popular courting choreography of the folk dance. Children then showed the percussion rhythms they learned from Rub\u00e9n\u2019s percussion workshop. Followed by Nes Gomez Jr., the escuela\u2019s master drummer and educator, who introduced and performed with a children\u2019s percussion ensemble, demonstrating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pasillo parche parche<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet another of the many rhythms from Colombia. It was amazing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The really little ones along with their parents were also treated to the virtuoso talents of Blanca Gonzalez and Jesse Elder of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musiquita<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a sing- and dance-along of classic Spanish songs, such as \u201cLos Pollitos\u201d, \u201cA\u00f1o Viejo\u201d and, of course, \u201cFeliz Navidad!\u201d The energy of Musiquita has been a highlight of the semester and we love them!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional musical instruments and beautiful costumes have now been stored and our teaching artists and staff have wrapped up another year of challenging yet fun-filled community-building.
