Baila is a Sri Lankan popular music and dance genre, which since its inception in the early 1970s, has always been a source of cultural unity and pride for an incredibly diverse island nation that has had its share of ethnic, religious and class based tension as well as colonial/post-colonial conflict.
This traveling 6-part pop up party takes place at venues in Staten Island, Eastern Queens, and Manhattan. Each program includes live performance as well as DJ’ed sets by local favorites such as DJ Anjalo and DJ Romesh and seeks to build community and carve out a space for the Sri Lankan popular music genre in the dominant city soundscape.
