Shot at Calabar Gallery in Harlem, this dance workshop features North African dancer Esraa Warda (www.esraawarda.com) and the members of Chaab Lab project, a collective that explores North African and Caribbean musical connections. A community-taught artist, Esraa covers the revolutionary roots and movements of Algerian rai music originating in the Western Algerian city “Wahran”, while teaching the basic steps and rhythms. A demonstration of how it all comes together follows with Jainardo Batista on bendir (frame-drum), Nisar Dahmani on derbouka (hand-drum), and Abdelilah El Kasmi on keyboard.
