Ebrima Jassey

Shot at our office in Lower Manhattan, Gambian jali/griot Ebrima Jassey performs several pieces on the balafon, a West African xylophone with gourds to amplify the keys. He shares a little about his personal history growing up in a family of jali, performing with the renowned band Kamara, and notes the impacts of the quarantine on West African musicians like himself. He also gives an in-depth look at the remarkable balafon, an instrument with over four-hundred years of documented history, though for Jassey it may well be the first of all instruments.
