Malang Johbarteh & Salieu Suso

Malang Jobarteh and his uncle Salieu Suso are both renowned jali or griots from the Gambia who tell Mandinka histories through song and story with the accompaniment of the kora, a harp-like instrument. They are also peace-makers and “edutainers” for the West African community back home and in the Bronx. In this edition of Beat of the Boroughs: NYC Online, Malang performs an original composition about his immigrant experiences in the United States, discusses the kora, and Salieu conveys the contemporary importance of the jali from Malang’s living room in Fordham Heights.
