Rafael Ramirez

Shot at home, this program features the remarkable Rafael Leal Ramirez, a Colombian drummer, percussionist, and educator with the CTMD Sharing Traditions program FolkCOLOMBIA Escuela de Danza y Música. For this homemade lecture/demonstration, he presents on a range of Colombian rhythms and traditions, such as cumbia, porro chocoano, currulao, joropo, and pasaje, which come from Colombia’s Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as the Andean and Eastern Plains regions. He also discusses the historical development of musical traditions that formed through the encounters and influences of Spanish, African, and Indigenous peoples.
