For this episode of Beat of the Boroughs: NYC Online, we have Xiao Xiannian and Julie Tay of the Mencius Society. Performing on the yangqin (hammered dulcimer), Xiao presents a number of traditional, classical, and 20th century songs (shi-dai ge) as well as pieces from popular films with inspiration from Latin music, American jazz, and popular jingles (e.g., ice-cream truck music) with Julie Tay accompanying on percussion. The two of them also share their personal stories and experiences as traditional musicians and community organizers, while reflecting on the social impact of COVID-19 on the Chinese community.
